Cut the home page's lighting file from 1,474 KB to 98 KB, so the stage lights up about eight seconds sooner on a slow connection.

The home page's 3D stage is lit by an environment image, and until now it downloaded the full-size one — a single 1,474 KB file, larger than everything else the page loads put together — while the stage was drawn by the plain lights alone, a much darker and muddier picture than the one we mean to show. Measured on the real page at 1.5 Mbps with the processor slowed six times: the lighting used to land 13.2 seconds in, and now lands at 5.3. The image is the same one, averaged down from 1024×512 to 256×128, and the stage's surfaces are matte enough that the two renders are indistinguishable at five widths and five points along the story. The remaining 5.3 seconds are the page's own code arriving and starting, not this file.
