We can now see when one internet connection takes an unusual share of a week's free-trial places. Nobody is refused because of it.

The free trial has one automatic protection against somebody creating accounts in bulk to sweep a week: it counts how many accounts were turned away from a week that was already full, and pauses the programme when that count runs far past a real week. But a set of accounts sized to the week's places turns nobody away, so the counter stays at zero and the pause never happens — this week has 19 places, and the pause needs 475 turned-away accounts. We now count how many of a week's places one internet connection takes in a UTC day, and past its share our operator sees it: what is counted is the same daily-changing value we already use for rate limits, which cannot be turned back into an address, and it is held in memory only and thrown away every night. Nothing is refused on this, because refusing would be a rule about who gets a place and the terms in force set that rule out without a per-connection limit, and a connection is a poor stand-in for a person in both directions.
