When you upload a video, you can upload a preview picture with it, and the upload screen shows what it adds to the storage cost.
The picture is a small ordinary file linked to the video: it is encrypted like any file, it is not shown as a file of its own, and it goes to the trash, comes back and is erased with the video. Without it, each device downloads the start of the video once and makes its own preview. To turn it on for every video, switch on Upload a preview with videos in Settings; it is off by default. In the CLI: nmts put <video> --thumbnail, and nmts get --thumbnail reads the picture back.

On phones, the home page jumped by up to 180px when the comparison table first came into view.
