The vision for NMTS

How far I want NMTS to go

As needmoretruth, I genuinely believe NMTS will grow into the single giant that takes the whole drive market. I am only a solo developer, with no reputation and no money.

So I built the NMTS SDK, which lets people put NMTS into their own products very easily, and I want to make NMTS a standard of sorts, so that anyone can start a cloud storage service with very little effort.

For now I have no plan to make money. The Platform API for businesses that use NMTS as their backend charges 0 % too, and NMTS stays non-profit.

Storage networks: Walrus, Filecoin, Arweave

NMTS chose Walrus because it was the easiest to build on. But Walrus splits every file into pieces and replicates them across the network, and that strength is also its weakness.

So I plan to use Filecoin, whose unit price is low to begin with, and let you keep two to six copies with several providers you can trust. With providers set up in advance I want to allow up to twelve copies, and for freedom's sake a single copy (no replication) too. Two or three copies will probably be the default.

Filecoin was on the plan since launch under the name NMTS Heavy, and it went in in September 2026. Arweave has been pushed back a little. I need to check first whether a user uploading inappropriate files could hurt NMTS, and then add it properly.

NMTS Platform: the SDK and the backend

With the NMTS SDK and the Platform API, a business can send the user the code that creates an NMTS key, so the key is made on the user's own device, while the API requests come from the business that uses NMTS. The business's server opens the account, so the user never solves an NMTS captcha, only whatever captcha the business provides.

The SDK and the Platform API are published. Backend mode, where a business runs the server side under its own name, does not exist yet; I will build it within 2026, and in law and in the terms I will try to favour the people who use NMTS as infrastructure or as a module.

If you are unhappy with a feature or with the terms, write to nmts@nmts.me. It is quite possible that I failed to support something, or supported it strangely, simply because I did not know, so I would be grateful for honest and detailed words. I am a solo developer, and precisely because of that, if your request is reasonable I will review it all the harder, and if I agree I will build the feature or remove it. That goes for the terms or anything else. What I will not do is break the law.

When you put NMTS into your product or run a business on NMTS as the backend, it is entirely fine to use cryptocurrency in the backend and ask your users for crypto, Stripe, fiat money or in-game currency. If a developer cannot use cryptocurrency at all, something that takes fiat and pays NMTS on their behalf may appear on top, but I would like NMTS to remain the base.

Two things that look odd at first sight

It is true that credits cannot be resold. But credits only look strange at a glance. They are simply my own money paying for a free trial so that individuals can try NMTS. I know of no cloud storage service that lets people sell its free trial to others for money, so I do not think I am the odd one.

It is also true that AI accounts cannot be transferred. AI accounts were made for an individual to hand to their own AI agent in the first place. For a business, as I said above, you can have NMTS keys created fresh on the user's device.

In fact, with the NMTS SDK and the Platform I intend to give businesses the greatest possible freedom. If you want to manage the accounts yourself, do that. If you want your users to manage them (the NMTS way), do that. NMTS provides the base and the freedom.

Non-profit, 0 % fee

NMTS is currently run as a non-profit service with a 0 % fee. I keep the running cost to the bare minimum and run it as a hobby, so this is not a problem, but if the cost of keeping NMTS up grows later I may switch to for-profit. For now there are only donations, and honestly I do not know how many people will donate.

Whether you are a business or an individual, if you have real business skill or already have a good product, you can put NMTS into your product or build a business on top of NMTS. You could run a subscription on the gym model, or put it into a game that already exists.

With the NMTS SDK, when a user saves data in your existing service you can send it to NMTS, so it fits into a product that is not a cloud storage service at all.

You can run NMTS in a way that suits your own country or language, and in a way that lets you meet legal regulation yourself. And even if you do not trust NMTS, NMTS recovery exists, so if the NMTS server goes down neither your files nor your customers' files will be lost.

NMTS runs on a local server right now for financial reasons. Once the finances recover I will move to a highly reliable VPS, spread it over several servers with different code, so that one dying does not take the others down.
